The Winterton Boat Building Museum most important function is the preservation of Winterton's unique history and art of boat building. Unlike the practice at many other museums, in Winterton the boat building exhibit is an interactive one. The Museum is actively preserving the history of boat building by allowing individuals from the community to construct traditional trap skiffs. Many times visitors were very surprised to watch the actual building of these boats in full view.

Winterton is one place on the island where the traditional methods and skills of wooden boat building are being revived and preserved.

That is thanks to the Winterton Heritage Advisory Board and its museum which occupies an old school in the heart of the town. The second floor of the building houses the community museum while the downstairs space has been dedicated to the Winterton Boat Building Museum.

The Winterton Boat Building Museum is operated by the Winterton Heritage Advisory Board, a committee of the Town of Winterton P.O. Box 59, Winterton, NL A0B 3M0
